Ringing in the New Year – My Magical Escape to the Gili Island

Ringing in the New Year – My Magical Escape to the Gili Island

The Gili Islands are a group of turquoise blue islands located off the northwest coast of Lombok Indonesia. Gili Trawangan is the most developed of the 3. It is an exotic getaway that teaches you the most basic life lessons, like living in the present, and slowing down and enjoying the moment. With no motor vehicles, no rat race, or the hustle of city life and breathtaking sunsets it forces you to savor every minute of life and tune into nature and oneself.

Life on the island is simple—there are no fancy roads or architecture, just vibrant and lovely people and nature. It has a huge reputation as a party hub with pristine beaches, handcrafted cocktails, electrifying beach clubs, and delicious food.

Ringing in the New Year of 2025 in Gili Trawangan was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. It was a unique experience and a different ball game from the experience back home- a breathtaking contrast to the towering buildings and constant rush of my home city, Bangalore. For the first time, I watched fireworks sparkle over the ocean with their reflections dancing in the waves. The island was filled with people from all over the globe with just one purpose, welcoming the new year with unrestrained joy.

GETTING THERE

From Bali- On arriving at the International airport in Bali, take a taxi to the Pendang Bai harbor in the southeast corner of Bali, which takes approx. 1.5- 2 hours.

Catch a public ferry from the Pendang Bai harbor. This is the most popular route. It takes about 2-3 hours to reach Gili.

From Lombok- Fly into Lombok from Ngurah Rai International Airport to Lombok International Airport, which takes about 40 minutes. Then you need to take a taxi to the Bangsal harbor on the Northwest coast of Lombok, which takes about 2 hours. A short 15–30-minute boat ride from Bangsal Harbor.

FIRST IMPRESSION

The moment the ferry docks you can’t help but be awestruck by the island’s charm. Its uniqueness hits you at first glance- no motorized vehicles in sight! The best way to explore the island is by foot, bicycle, and horse-drawn cart.

The energy is lively, the vibe is relaxed and there exists this sense of adventure in the air

With New Year just around the corner, the island was buzzing with travelers from around the world, all awaiting an unforgettable island-style celebration and experience. Just 7kms long, Gilli Trawangan is a mix of tropical paradise and lively fun. The main road is dotted with colorful cafés, beach clubs, boutique shops, and cozy places to stay, each with its unique charm.

Irrespective of what entices – sipping cocktails with sandy toes, delicious fresh seafood under fairy lights or just soaking in the island nightlife – Gili is a paradise that never seems to sleep.

Checking In: My Gili Island Accommodation

I stayed at Deja Vu, a beachfront hotel just 5 minutes from the harbour. This budget-friendly option offered basic amenities (free Wi-Fi, complimentary breakfast, outdoor pool) in a prime location. It is perfect for travelers who value beachfront convenience over luxury.

The downsides included limited reception hours, inconsistent hot water, and basic bathroom facilities. However, if you’re an easy going traveler prioritizing location and island immersion, Deja Vu serves its purpose well.

How Gili T Throws the Ultimate New Year’s Celebration

New Year’s eve in Bali was nothing short of magical. The whole island came alive with lights, music and a contagious spirit as it turned into a massive open air party. Every beach club and bar overflowed with people, dancing beneath the stars, celebrating with strangers who felt like old friends and soaking in every moment that would never be forgotten.

The island’s main 7km turned into a street party with partygoers roaming wherever the night led them as they waltzed in and out of clubs as they sipped cocktails.

My night started at the hotel with pre-drinks, games, and laughter. Closer to midnight, I ventured into the chaos, with the wild spirit of the island taking charge.

The first stop of the night was at Tequila Sunrise a stunning beachfront club with front row seats to the ocean and the glittering waves reflecting the neon party lights. The atmosphere was vibrant with the music buzzing through the air, people dancing on the sand, and drinks flowing nonstop.

When the clock struck twelve, the fireworks lit up the sky, and their colors reflected on the ocean. For a moment, everything around me faded; it was just me and the sound of the waves, the fireworks above, and the indescribable feeling of stepping into a brand new year on a tropical island in the best possible way.

However, the night was still young, and I jumped into Gili nightlife, hopping from one bar to another with its vibe. Next on the itinerary was Jungle Bar- a glowing neon-lit paradise filled with bright disco lights, booming music, and an energy that pulled you in the moment you stepped foot.

I quickly found myself in a heated battle on beer pong, cheering, laughing, and making memories with strangers turned friends. The next few hours were a blur of dancing, shots, and pure ecstasy.

As if the night couldn’t get better, it began to rain. I’m not talking about the rain that would send people running for cover, but a tropical shower that only enhanced the nights atmosphere. We danced harder, arms wide open, completely caught up in the moment.

By 3 AM after a whole lot of dancing and exhaustion with aching feet and full heart we ended the night perfectly by indulging in some shawarma in a street- side stall.

ISLAND ACTIVITIES AND HIGHLIGHTS

  1. SNORKELLING AND SCUBA DIVING

Snorkeling and scuba diving in Gili offer two incredible ways to explore the island’s vibrant underwater world. Snorkeling is a must-try for its crystal-clear waters, shallow reefs (3–5m deep), and abundant marine life, including sea turtles, colorful fish, and coral gardens. Popular snorkeling spots include Turtle Point, the Bask Nest Sea Sculptures, and Blue Reef, with options for shared or private tours. For those seeking a deeper adventure, scuba diving in Gili is world-class, with dive sites like Shark Point and the Bounty Wreck, where you can encounter reef sharks, manta rays, and mesmerizing coral walls. The island is also a great place to get PADI-certified, with dive shops offering courses for beginners and advanced divers alike

  1. SUNSET POINT

The sky changes into an amazing mix of hues every evening from the sunset viewpoint on Gili Trawangan, making for a picture-perfect occasion. This calm location, which is only a short stroll from the main beach, is perfect for groups, couples, and lone travelers who want to relax after an exciting day of exploring. It is a very serene and enchanted experience, and many guests bring food and beverages to enjoy as the sun sets into the ocean. Remember to bring your camera—the sights will never be forgotten!

  1. BIKE AROUND THE ISLAND

The lack of motorized traffic makes biking the best way to explore the island. Most hotels rent bikes to their customer for about 50,000 to 70,000 IDR. Additionally, there are lots of vendors along the main street who also provide bike rentals.

Cycling is a fun and beautiful way to see the sights on Gili Trawangan because it’s a small island that can be explored in less than an hour.

  1. ENJOY DELICIOUS FOOD

One of the undeniable highlights of Gili Trawangan was the incredible food scene. The variety was almost overwhelming with countless restaurants lining both sides of the main street—offering everything from authentic Indonesian flavors to continental delicacies and Indian favorites.

My top recommendations

  1. The Banyan Tree
It is a delightful haven for health-conscious foodies. Offering seating both upstairs and on a terrace overlooking the beach, this café serves a variety of nutritious, plant-based dishes with plenty of vegetarian options.
  2. Kayu Cafe
Nestled along the beachfront, Kayu Cafe and Restaurant offers a perfect blend of Indonesian and Western cuisine. An ideal spot to enjoy a leisurely meal while soaking in the island vibes.
  3. Coffee & Thyme
A cozy and inviting spot, Coffee & Thyme is perfect for those seeking a relaxing coffee break. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee fills the air, and the menu offers a range of delicious breakfast and brunch options that will leave you feeling refreshed and energized.

FINAL THOUGHTS

No words can describe the time I had in Gili. Going from clear blue waters and happy beach clubs to the most peaceful sunsets and meaningful adventures, Bali is true to what it stands for, the paradise of the islands. It was not only the beauty of the place that caught my memory; it was the freedom, the unpredictability, and the vibe of the people. Somewhere between dancing carefree on the beach and discovering the island, I found my passion for travel — and a little more about myself. Gili didn’t just give me memories; it gave me a new perspective.
